DETROIT-- A 22-year old woman is facing federal charges for disrupting a flight Thursday from New York to Chicago. Several passengers jumped into action to restrain her.

Shuttle America flight 3461 was operating as United Express with 69 passengers and four crew members. It was diverted to Detroit where authorities took the woman into custody.

Breanna Farquharson is charged with assaulting a flight crew member or flight attendant of the aircraft, according to WDIV-TV.

Passengers say the woman appeared to suffer a "psychotic episode."

Cell phone video shows police in Detroit handcuffing her. She was carried off the plane, ending an ordeal passengers described as "unsettling."

Bob Fitzsimmons was among several passengers who jumped into action to restrain the woman until the plane landed. Fitzsimmons says the airline industry needs better in-flight protocol for dealing with unruly passengers.
