PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill. – A Catholic school that has been in the Prospect Heights community for 60 years could soon be closing its doors for good.
Last month, the archdiocese notified St. Alphonsus that it had until January 4 to raise $300,000 for its operating budget. The school must also show how it plans to increase enrollment and ensure that 90 percent of its K-8 students will return next year.
Mallorie Bromer, who went to school at St. Alphonsus, is home on winter break from college. She set up a gofundme page hoping to help the school reach its goal.
The school is almost there -- just over $200,000 raised, with less than 48 hours to go.
A generous parishioner also made a donation of $10,000 and hopes the community follows suit, to save a school that means so much to so many.
Monday is the fundraising deadline.
