CHICAGO – After 10 years of planning, a new trail is finally coming to the Northwest Side.
Today crews broke ground on the North Branch Trail extension. The big picture here is that this will help give more people in Chicago access to low-stress bike routes away from heavy traffic.
Currently there are 18 miles of trail from Devon and Caldwell up to the Botanic Gardens. Now they’re going to add 3 additional miles from that point down to Foster..
The plan includes building bridges over the Metra tracks and the north of the river, as well as an underpass near Cicero and the Edens. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for planning says its goal is to double the amount of trail miles by 2040 to nearly 1.400 miles.
The trail will be built in two stages: the first down to Forest Glen is set to be completed by late spring next year. And then they’ll finish it down to Foster/Kostner.
