Auto center worker dies after tire explodes

SALEM, N.H. — Police in New Hampshire say a large truck tire has exploded at an auto center, killing a worker and seriously injuring a customer.

Police say they were called to the Sears Auto Center in Salem at about 7:50 a.m. Saturday.

According to a 911 call released by Salem police, a caller reports that a worker was filling up the tire when it “exploded off the machine” and hit both men in the head.

Authorities identified the worker as 22-year-old Justin Almon of Sandown. They say he died of head injuries.

WMUR-TV reports that a customer also suffered serious head injuries and was flown to Boston Medical Center. Police say his condition is not known.

Salem police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
