CHICAGO --A Chicago police officer has been charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of a teenager.

Officer Jason Van Dyke showed up at the Cook County Criminal Court building with his lawyer at about 8 a.m. Tuesday.

He was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

McDonald was shot 16 times back in October of last year.

The charges come as the city prepares to release the police video of the shooting.

Several people who saw the video say McDonald was armed with a small knife but appeared to be walking away from several officers.
