SALEM, Mass. — Surveillance video shows Philip Chism, a former Massachusetts high school student accused of raping and killing his algebra teacher, following the woman moments before her slaying.

The video shows Colleen Ritzer walking down a hallway at Danvers High School. Seconds behind her wearing a hoodie is Chism, according to prosecutors.

The video cuts to a shot of Ritzer walking into the bathroom. Chism, a few steps behind, pauses at the door and puts on gloves before walking in behind her.

Prosecutors say Chism raped and murdered Ritzer in a school bathroom. Then, he used a recycling bin used to move Ritzer’s body to the woods outside of the school.

Chism has pleaded not guilty in the October 2013 slaying. He was 14 at the time.

The defense attorney said in court Monday that Chism killed Ritzer but isn’t criminally responsible because he is mentally ill.
