CHICAGO -- A one-of-a-kind adoption proceeding took place in a Cook County courtroom this morning when a brother and sister were separately adopted by two adult sisters.

The 5-year-old Jose Dorsey and 8-year-old Gabriella Gooden are now legally cousins.

Today happens to be National Adoption Day which raises awareness of children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted into permanent homes.

Nearly 900 adoptions have been finalized in Cook County this year.

About a thousand children are still eligible to be adopted across Illinois.
