CHICAGO -- Three teens were shot near a high school Friday afternoon on the South Side.

Police say around 12:50 p.m. a group of teens walking on a sidewalk near Excel High School in the 7000 block of S. Washtenaw in the city’s Marquette Park neighborhood and were ambushed.

A gunman hid in a gangway across the street and opened fired.

A 17-year-old boy and two other teens were wounded. The boy was reportedly shot in his head and torso.

“The injured subjects ran into the school for assistance. The offender then fled the scene on foot,” said Police Chief Wayne Gulliford.

This afternoon, the CEO of Excel High School released a statement saying:

We are heartbroken over this senseless act of violence against three teenagers who were standing outside our school. This is a very emotional and painful time for the entire staff that works so closely and cares so much about kids in our community.
This is the second shooting outside a Chicago High School this week. Yesterday, at Baker College Prep, a 14 year old was shot.
