Chicago high school football player dies after game

CHICAGO -- A senior at Bogan High School died after getting injured during a football game Thursday.

The game was played yesterday at Stagg Field against Chicago Vocational High School.

17-year-old Andre Smith, who is from of Country Club Hills, was hurt during the game.  Officials won't say exactly how Andre was injured, but say he was transported to Christ Hospital around 6 p.m. and died about 12 hours later.

Spectators at the game tell WGN News Andre was tackled hard and “fell on the back of his head.”  One witness said Andre got hit and laid on the ground for about 10 minutes before walking over to the bench “woozy.”

According the team's roster, Andre wears #2 and is a wide receiver and defensive back.

Fellow classmates remember Andre as a funny athlete who was a good player.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool released the following statement:

"For all of us at Chicago Public Schools, our hearts are heavy and saddened this morning to learn that one of our student athletes at Bogan High School has passed away. CPS grief counselors are on-site at Bogan to provide counseling for our students. We ask that you respect the privacy of the student's family and keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

An autopsy may happen as early as Saturday.
