East Chicago councilman charged with murder

EAST CHICAGO — A city councilman in East Chicago is facing a murder charge.

Police say councilman Robert Battle shot and killed a man behind his home.

The victim was found Monday morning in an alley. He had been shot in the back.

Battle surrendered to police within hours of the shooting; he’s also facing federal charges of trafficking marijuana.
