American Airlines pilot dies mid-flight

SYRACUSE, NY -- An American Airlines pilot suffered a medical emergency during a red-eye flight this morning and died.

Flight 550 was headed from Phoenix to Boston when the pilot became ill.

The co-pilot diverted to Syracuse at about 7 a.m., but the pilot could not be revived.

The flight carried 147 passengers and a crew of five.

A replacement crew continued the flight to Boston landing at about 11:30a.m.
