RIVERSIDE, Ill. – A woman has been charged with aggravated DUI after she hit a child riding a bike in front of his home in Riverside.

Cynthia Grosse, 66, of Lyons is charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and transportation of open alcohol.

Police say Grosse hit an 8-year-old boy with her car around 5 p.m. Monday.

The boy was unconscious and bleeding heavily. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where he was placed in a medically induced coma in an attempt to reduce swelling in his brain.

Police say when they arrived to the scene, Grosse was sitting on the curb crying. They also say she smelled like alcohol and seemed confused.

According to police, she admitted hitting the boy and failed field sobriety tests.

Police say the boy’s siblings, ages 6 and 11, were in the front yard and witnessed the accident.

Grosse told police she was on her way home from her job as a caretaker for an elderly person in La Grange.

Police say Grosse admitted to drinking while she was working and while driving.
