CHICAGO -- One of the victims of this weekend's gun violence was a former college football player who grew up in South Chicago.

Lavell Southern, 23, was killed early Sunday morning. He was among the six killed and 29 injured in shootings over the Labor Day weekend in Chicago.

He played football at Mount Carmel High School, and played a year at Carthage College in Wisconsin before suffering a knee injury.

He and a friend were shot in the 1100 block of West Randolph. His friend survived.

No suspects are in custody, and police haven't said what the motive may have been.
