COLUMBUS, Ohio — Twin sisters are recovering after a successful 16-hour surgery to separate them.

Acen and Apio Akello are 11 months old and were born in Uganda. They were connected at the hip and pelvic region.

They were flown to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio last December for treatment.

Last week, more than 30 doctors completed the complicated surgery to untangle the girls’ spinal cords and separate them.

They are doing well and are expected to return to Uganda after they’ve recovered.
