DEKALB, Ill. — The Siberian husky that served as Northern Illinois University’s mascot for nearly a decade has died of cancer.

The DeKalb Daily Chronicle reports Diesel was diagnosed with lymphoma in August.

The sad news was posted to Diesel’s Facebook page late Sunday night:

The husky was NIU’s mascot for nine years. He represented the team at games and was once captured by ESPN high-fiving a cheerleader.

When Diesel stepped aside in 2013 he was given the title “mascot emeritus.”
