Tips:
- Be careful not to “professionalize” youth sports. Beware of too many practices and training sessions and over-emphasizing one sport.
- If aches and pains linger, don’t ‘tough it out.’ Contact an orthopedic surgeon, physical therapist or athletic trainer to evaluate your injury.
- Don’t set unreasonable goals for your weight or body fat percentage. Work with your coaches and doctor to determine what is best for you
- Wear the appropriate gear! Kids do much of their growing over summer – even 3 inches or more. Make sure any equipment – helmets, shin guards, cleats – are checked for fit. Buy new gear in correct sizes.
- How do parents know if their child’s aches are more serious? What to look for in football, soccer, cheerleading, etc…
- Encourage kids to speak up if they are injured.
