CHICAGO -- Looking for a new place to live? Whether you're looking to buy or rent, these apps and websites will help you out:

Free for iOS and Android
During our home search, my husband and I relied heavily on this app. With one tap, you can find open houses near you, read insights from Redfin real estate agents and set-up detailed search parameters. The search we set up sent us emails when new properties we might like popped up on the app -- those emails were very helpful during our search.
School Sparrow
A  Chicago couple set up School Sparrow after a frustrating search for a CPS neighborhood school for their eldest daughter. The website combines real estate listings with school boundaries and rankings. Very useful!
The Chicago-based AptAmigo launched in August, and its concept is very unique. The website features reviews of current and former renter, so potential new renters know what they're getting into. At the time of writing this article, AptAmigo had 3,000 reviews and my guess is that this number will continue to grow.
