Several teens charged in brutal bike theft beating

CHICAGO --  Five teenagers, some honor students, are now facing two felony charges after police say they brutally beat a man for his bike yesterday afternoon in the city’s Wicker Park neighborhood.

Police say 20-year-old Eric Batlle thought he was meeting up with the person who going to buy his bike.

He was looking to sell his bike for $500.  One of the attackers answered his Facebook ad but when they met at the Shell Station parking lot near Damen and Division around 2 p.m. yesterday, the four other teens jumped out and beat him.

Batlle held on to his bike and police showed up and arrested the five teenagers.

One on the suspects is on his way to Cal Tech, another has a scholarship to University of Michigan. A third got a 27 on ACT and the fourth was attending DePaul.  Now all four, plus a 17-year-old, are facing two felony charges.

The four adults are being held on a $75,000 bond.  No information was available for the juvenile.

No word yet on the condition of the victim.
