ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Illinois’ biggest thoroughbred race of the year finally has a winner with some local roots.

“The Pizza Man” became the first horse bred in Illinois to win the Arlington Million on Saturday afternoon, using a late charge to best competitors for the victory.

The six-year old charged hard late and then held on for the win for Rich and Karen Papiese, natives of the south suburbs who trained “The Pizza Man” at the Midwest Thoroughbred Inc. stable.

It’s the first win for “The Pizza Man” in a Grade 1 stakes race.

Big Blue Kitten finished second while Shining Copper, the race favorite, came in third.
