Moviegoers fearing chainsaw attack escape Newport Beach theater

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Police in California are searching for a group of men after they scared people into thinking someone was attacking the movie theater.

It happened during a screening of "The Gift" at the Edwards Big Newport 6 movie theater complex in Newport Beach.

Moviegoers say the men swung open an emergency exit door, held up a hand-held machine and started yelling.

People in the theater thought they were holding up a gun or chainsaw.

Police say it ended up being a leaf blower.

People in the theater say they feared for their lives.

Everyone started running out of the theater when the men came in. A few were trampled and suffered minor injuries.

The men escaped back out the emergency door before police arrived.

Investigators believe between two and three men were involved with ages ranging from late teens to early 30s.

Police say the men entered the theater with the intention of scaring moviegoers.
