WAUKEGAN, Ill. -- An employee at the Waukegan Yacht Club is being credited with helping two men escape serious injury after their car went into Lake Michigan Tuesday afternoon.

From his office window, 27-year-old Dave Shaw saw the car crash through a cement planter.  The experienced lifeguard ran out and jumped into the water.  A second yacht club employee threw-in a life preserver.

Witnesses tell us one man in the car stayed in the vehicle for a while finishing a cigarette.

The other occupant ignored a life preserver.

Police recovered the car and are searching it for evidence.

It was unclear what caused the crash.
