PRYOR, Mont. — Two parents were killed and their daughter was shot in the back by the man they were trying to help, says the FBI.

The triple shooting occurred on the side of a road on the Crow Indian Reservation about 30 miles outside of Billings, Montana. The suspect, 18-year-old Jesus Deniz Mendoza of Wyoming, is in federal custody.

According to the FBI, the Shane family stopped to help Mendoza after they saw his car parked along the side of the road. Mendoza then allegedly pulled a gun on the family and demanded money, but the family said they didn’t have any.

The daughter said that Mendoza then ordered them to walk away from the car. As she was doing so, she heard a gunshot. Turning around, she saw her father, Jason Shane Jr., lying in the road. Mendoza then shot her mother, Tana Shane.

When the woman began running away, she was shot in the back.

Mendoza drove off in the car while the daughter ran for help. She was later hospitalized.

Mendoza was arrested hours later about 100 miles away in Meeteese, Wyoming. He said he shot the family because “he was getting tired of waiting around, and because the daughter laughed at him,” according to the criminal compliant.
