SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Authorities have confirmed that a body found in a trash bin is that of an 8-year-old girl who disappeared from her Northern California housing complex.
Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel said Tuesday at a news conference that the remains are those of Madyson Middleton.
The search for the Santa Cruz girl ended Monday night when a detective discovered the body at the artist community and housing center where she lived with her mother.
Vogel says a 15-year-old boy, who also lives in the complex, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He says the boy lured Madyson to his apartment, where she was killed. A motive has not yet been released.
Madyson was last seen Sunday afternoon riding a scooter at the Tannery Arts Center. Beyond the complex, authorities searched forest, parks and coastline.
