NEW YORK — Donald Trump is leading the pack in a loaded Republican presidential field.

In a new CNN/ORC poll, 18 percent of Republicans say they want Trump to be their party’s nominee for president. Jeb Bush came in second with 14 percent. All other GOP candidates polled below 10 percent.

Trump’s poll numbers have actually climbed since his controversial comments last week on U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona. First Trump said the former Vietnam POW wasn’t a war hero; then he tried to walk the remark back.

Trump finally went on the offensive, saying he would not apologize, and that McCain hasn’t done enough for veterans.

Many of Trump’s fellow Republican candidates have called for him to apologize or drop out of the race.

Sixteen Republicans have entered the 2016 White House race so far.
