BOSTON — One of America’s most iconic shoes, Converse’s Chuck Taylor All Star, is getting a make over.
Converse unveiled the “Chuck II” this morning at a press conference in South Boston in what company CEO Jim Calhoun called one of the most monumental moments in the brand’s history, according to the Boston Globe.
The original Chuck Taylor design has not been modified since 1917, and though the shoe has been widely popular among everyone from basketball stars to punk rockers, it doesn’t exactly leave the wearer walking on clouds.
Podiatrist Lloyd S. Smith told the Boston Globe that the current Chuck Taylor design offers about as much benefit to the foot as a pair of 5-inch high heels. As shoes by Nike, Puma, Adidas and other brands have become increasingly ergonomic and lightweight, Chuck Taylors were left in the dust.
But Converse hopes the new design will change that.
The Chuck II will include a number of features, like improved arch-support, added padding and more breathable canvas, aimed at making the nearly century-old sneaker more wearer-friendly.
“(We’re) ushering in not just a new sneaker, but a completely new way of thinking,” Calhoun said in a press release.
The new shoe, which comes in red, white, blue and black, will hit store shelves on July 28. High-tops will run for $75 and it’ll cost you $70 for a low-cut pair.
