Illinois woman charged in death of infant grandson at home daycare
MOLINE, Ill. — An Illinois woman was charged after another child in her home daycare allegedly inflicted injuries that killed her 4-month-old grandson.
Beverly James, 78, faces one felony count of endangering the life and health of a child. According to WQAD, she was released from Rock Island Jail after posting $10,000 bond.
Back in March, James’ infant grandson Darien Watkins was found unresponsive when emergency workers answered a 911 call to his grandmother’s home in Moline, Ill. Darien reportedly had a fractured skull, broken ribs, and bite marks consistent with a child’s mouth. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and airlifted to Peoria that same day, and he died.
Authorities eventually concluded that Darien “did not die of natural causes,” Rock Island County Sheriff Gerry Bustos said.
Bustos alleges that another child, under the age of 5, inflicted the injuries that ultimately killed 4-month-old Darien. This child is believed to be the only other person in the room when Darien was injured.
