Woman killed, man critical in car crash on South Side

CHICAGO -- A speeding car hit a fire hydrant this morning at Garfield and LaSalle.

The accident happened around 2:45 a.m. right off the Dan Ryan Expressway.

A 38-year-old woman passenger was killed; the 25-year-old male driver is in very critical condition.

The car was so badly crumpled by the force of the crash that it took 20 minutes to get both occupants out.

It's not known yet why the car was going so fast, or why the driver lost control.

No names have been released.
