CHICAGO -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is cracking down on a website he claims serves as an open forum for prostitution.

Dart announced a national initiative Wednesday asking credit card companies to stop processing payments for adult service ads from the website So far, American Express and MasterCard have agreed.

"The actions today of both MasterCard and Visa are huge. They should be roundly commended for their actions, and we stand firmly with them in what they're doing," Dart said. "We realize the battle ahead is still going to proceed, that we realize that Backpage is probably not going to go away, but what we can tell you is that for all the different women, children and men, to some extent too, who have been exploited by these sites, it is going to be increasingly more difficult for those events to occur again."

WGN has requested for comment on these actions, and they have not yet responded.
