NEW ORLEANS — A manhunt is underway for a suspect who is alleged to have shot and killed a New Orleans police officer while the officer was transporting him to jail for a different offense.
WRAL reports New Orleans police officer Daryle Holloway was shot Saturday morning while transporting 33-year-old Travis Boys, who was under arrest on an aggravated assault charge.
Police said Boys was able to get free from his handcuffs and shoot Holloway while he was driving, according to WRAL.
NOLA.com reports the car then crashed into a pole, and Boys fled on foot. Holloway was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police, state troopers and local sheriff’s deputies are conducting a manhunt for Boys.
According to NOLA.com, Holloway was a 22-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department.
The officer was 45 and the father of three children, according to reports.
