Off-duty officer shoots armed robber in East Garfield Park

CHICAGO — An off-duty Cook County sheriff’s officer shot and wounded a man to break up a robbery.

It happened near Madison and St. Louis, in East Garfield Park Sunday night.

The officer was about to leave for work when he saw someone getting robbed.

Police say the robber fired at the officer first.

Several shots were exchanged, before the officer wounded the robber in the leg.

No one else was hurt.

The suspect still got himself to the hospital, where officers found him.

No charges have been filed.
