Social media hookup apps like "Tinder" are being blamed for a rise in sexually transmitted diseases.

Health experts in Rhode Island say the number of syphilis cases skyrocketed 79 percent between 2013 and 2014.

Cases of HIV and gonorrhea also increased but not as drastically.

Officials blame some of the increase on hookup apps which promote casual and often anonymous sexual encounters.

Rhode Island officials say the stats reflect a national trend.
