NEW YORK — David Letterman officially says goodbye Wednesday night. Frequent guest Bill Murray made a surprise appearance Tuesday night, jumping out of a cake.

This was Murray’s 44th appearance. He was also on the first show in 1982.

Later in the show, they played some of Murray’s best moments from Letterman’s show.

Then, Murray abruptly ended the interview and went outside the theater to rally fans.

They sang songs in the middle of the street trying to convince Dave to stay for another 30 years.

Guests for Letterman’s final show haven’t been announced.
