Back in December WGN brought you a story on more and more African Americans using DNA tests to trace their ancestry.
WGN’s Cortney Hall took a test and found out life changing information that inspired her to go a step further.
Her DNA test said she was of Senegalese Mandinka ancestry. The simple test opened up to a land and culture she says she knew nothing about.
“All of the sudden, I had a cultural identity outside of nationality and race more specific than African-American,” she says.
And then she booked a ticket for her first trip to Africa.
Cortney shares her journey and discovery in the video piece above and several web extras.
