BEIRUT — U.S. officials say a senior Islamic State commander has been killed in a firefight with American commandos in eastern Syria.

Officials say about a dozen militant fighters were killed but the commandos all returned safely to their base in Iraq.

The National Security Council identifies the commander who was killed as Abu Sayyaf, who had a senior role in overseeing the Islamic State group’s oil and gas operations.

It says his wife was captured in the raid and a Yazidi woman being held as a slave was rescued.
