CHICAGO -- Boating season has arrived in the Chicago area.

As part of the kick-off to "Boating Safety Week," the Coast Guard is asking people to be careful on water crafts.

The Coast Guard says Chicago is the sixth deadliest when it comes to boating accidents. Boater inexperience and drinking are behind that grim statistic.

Officials are urging boaters to wear life jackets, stay sober, and pay attention to signage.

The Coast Guard will release a boater safety app soon. It will feature, among other things, weather reports and a function for calling for help when in distress. The app will be available on May 18th at no cost.
