DOLTON, Ill. -- Dolton hadn’t had a murder in two years, until 3:45 Wednesday afternoon.

That’s when a victim, shot yesterday, was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill.

21-year-old Demetrius Southerland was from Chicago. He was visiting his girlfriend in Dolton, Ill., out walking her dog Tuesday night when he was shot in the head.

Dolton police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force have been working the case since then.

Southerland worked construction with his grandfather, had no known enemies and in his entire life had had no contact with the police.

He hung on in critical condition, before being taken off life-support this afternoon.

Southerland’s heartbroken family has gathered here to help police appeal for help from the public.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
