BURNHAM, Ill. -- Several people are now looking for a place to stay after a 3-alarm fire caused heavy damage at their apartment building in south suburban Burnham.
The fire began after 3 a.m. Monday.
Police officers were able to alert residents to the fire and help them to safety before the flames engulfed the building.
Resident Frank Moore says he was awakened by the smell of smoke and then heard police officers banging on his door. He says his hallway was filled with thick, black smoke. He was forced to crawl on his hands and knee to escape from the building.
No one was injured but the 12-unit building may be a total loss.
Bernice Bryant has lived in the building for 16 years and she say she has never seen anything like this. Bryant says she had no time to save anything from her apartment but she did manage to escape unharmed. "It was very scary", says Bryant.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
