SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois State Police has received the go ahead from the Federal Aviation Administration to use drones for crash and crime scene photography.

They’re avoiding the term “drone” though.

State police say the “Unmanned Aircraft System” program will not be used for surveillance purposes.

They say the use of the aircraft will cut down on the amount of time that roadways are closed during major traffic accidents.
