Indiana man killed after witnessing car break-ins

MERRIVILLE, Ind. -- A Northwest Indiana man was killed after he stumbled upon a group of young men breaking into cars.

Cecil Pendleton, Jr., 55, was leaving his apartment building and headed to work around 5 a.m. Wednesday. He was fatally shot inside his work van in the parking lot of the Tan Tar A Apartments in Merrillville.

Witnesses reported seeing three or four young men speeding away from the scene in a black Chevrolet Impala. The suspects broke into at least two cars, before shooting Pendleton, police said.
