Chicago Cubs claim pitcher Anthony Varvaro from Red Sox

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs have claimed right-handed pitcher Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, the team announced Sunday.

Left-handed pitcher Joseph Ortiz has been designated for assignment to make room for Varvaro on the team’s 40-man roster.

Varvaro, 30, is 7-9 with 20 holds, one save and a 3.23 ERA in 166 major league relief appearances with Seattle, Atlanta and Boston.

Varvaro was traded to the Red Sox last December and went 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA nine relief appearances this season. He was designated for assignment on April 29.
