CICERO, Ill. — Police have charged a man in the beating death of an 18-month-old in Cicero, town officials said in a statement Sunday.

According to the statement police charged Martin Alvarado Jr., 23, with first degree murder.

Officials said on April 9 the Cicero Police Department responded to a call of an unresponsive child in the 1600 block of 49th Court in Cicero.

There they found 18-month-old Edwin Eli O’Reilly. The child succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at nearby MacNeal Hospital.

According to the statement, the child was in the care of Alvarado at the time of his death.

Police say the man was changing the young victim’s diapers when the child urinated on him. Alvarado Jr. allegedly struck the baby multiple times about the body causing the child’s death.

Alvarado Jr. is due in bond court on Monday morning at the Maybrook Court House in Maywood, Illinois.
