How you can help Illinois tornado victims

ROCHELLE, Ill. -- At least two tornadoes unleashed incredible destruction through north central Illinois. Two people are dead, and several others are injured. Some people are also unaccounted for.

Many WGN viewers have asked how they can help the victims of the severe weather that hit northern Illinois Thursday night.

  • Donations of Food, Water and New Clothing and linens are being received at Rochelle Fire Department at 401 5th Avenue or 105 S. Main, Rochelle, IL 61068 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
  • Operation Blessing is looking for volunteers Saturday April 11th at 9 a.m. Volunteers should be 18 years or older, and wear closed toed shoes and long pants.  Staging location: Jones Road and North 9th Street (Helms Field)
  • Gift Cards may be delivered to Rochelle Fire Department at 401 5th Avenue or the new collection area at 105 S. Main
  • Financial contributions are being accepted for the victims of the Rochelle area tornado. If you wish to make a donation, you can visit
  • The American Red Cross website has a donation tool, and users can specify that funds be siphoned to a local chapter. Credit cards are accepted.
  • A GoFundMe page has been set up for the ravaged Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere, Ill.  Three animals were killed. Zoo officials estimate they'll need $20,000 for repairs.
  • A Facebook page titled Fairdale, IL Tornado Recovery has been established. Updates on how you can help Fairdale will be posted there.
  • The Salvation Army is also accepting monetary donations online or over the phone 1-800-SAL-ARMY. You can also text SACHICAGO to 80888 to make a $10 donation.  Additionally, the Salvation Army will be offering vouches for lodging, dining, and groceries for storm victims. Also available, clothing and food. Please bring identification.  They will be at United Methodist Church located at 709 4th Street Rochelle Saturday (4/11/15) 9a.m. -12 p.m., Sunday (4/12/15) 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.  and Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  •  Donations are being accepted at the Kirkland Firehouse at 3891 IL-72 in Kirkland,  for the American Red Cross.  Victims need hand sanitizers, water, blankets, ready-to-eat food, baby wipes, hand wipes and first aid items.

      I know that insurance claims are a lengthy process and financial help in this area is needed immediately, but I would hope that the zoo is properly insured and that the entirety of repairs won’t require donations to fund.

    Okay – thanks for letting us know where we can deposit cash but if we want to come help with clean up – help build houses – help serve food? Any useful information besides how to drain our wallets?

      Was the video not up or where the volunteer meetup point when you commented on this article or did you just want to complain about people wanting your money? If you don’t have money to give then don’t donate. Pretty simple stuff

    FYI In one of your reports you swapped Rochelle and Fairdale on the map- Also Kings is straight west of Chicago which means it’s not in central Illinois.
