PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill. —  Cook County authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the parents of a 3-year-old girl found wandering the streets alone.

Three people stopped to help Wednesday, when they saw the girl crying at a busy intersection in Prospect Heights.

She only knew her first name, and was able to tell police she was left alone at a nearby forest preserve.

The girl’s family came forward after police asked the public for help identifying her.

She is now in the care of one of those relatives.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office says the father is in custody in another state, but did not say why.

DCFS has opened a separate investigation into the father for allegations of neglect.

The agency has not had prior contact with the family.
