Woman killed in Northwest Side fire

CHICAGO — A 26-year-old woman was killed and a man was seriously injured in an overnight fire at a single-family home on the Northwest Side.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Saturday in the basement of the bungalow in the 6000 block of West Nelson Street in the Belmont Central neighborhood.

Witnesses say the woman died after becoming trapped in the basement and the man was burned while trying to save her. He was taken to the hospital in serious-to-critical condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
