PITTSBURGH — A girl with cystic fibrosis messaged a boy with cystic fibrosis, and now they are married. But at the moment, they cannot even be in the same room.
As CNN’s Senior Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen reports, Katie Donovan needs a double lung transplant but Medicare won’t pay for it. Without it, her doctors say she won’t live longer than a year.
Her husband Dalton, who has private insurance, got a transplant in November. Unfortunately, the transplant drugs suppressed his immune system, so he can’t be near his wife because her infection would kill him.
“I just want to make it to see our four-year anniversary in July and be able to hold hands and just hug. That’s all I really want — to be able to hug my husband on our fourth anniversary,” Katie said.
