KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A police officer in Kansas City, Mo., recently had the assignment of a lifetime after he had stopped in to grab a drink from a convenience store.
According to FOX4, officer Ryan Taylor was about to go off-duty when a stranger came into the store and alerted him that a woman was giving birth in the parking lot.
“A citizen came in and said, ‘Call 911! There’s a lady delivering out in the parking lot!’ And I took a second and said, ‘Wait! I’m 911!’” Taylor told FOX4.
According to KMBC, the woman and her husband were trying to make it to St. Luke's Hospital in Missouri, about an hour from the couple's home, but the baby could not wait.
The officer remained with the woman while her husband called 911, according to multiple reports.
A few minutes later, Taylor single-handedly delivered a baby boy named Jack, Fox4 reported.
"(I) took him and picked him up and gave a little rub to him just to get him breathing. He took his first breath in my arms, and it was emotional. It was just amazing," Taylor told KMBC.
Taylor also told Fox4, “Seeing that little person in my arms, and it’s just like, ‘Oh my goodness. Here you are, little man.’ This is the best. Honestly, I don’t think I am going to encounter anything in my career that’s going to top this.”
Taylor, who according to Fox4 is 29 and has no kids of his own, said he plans to keep in touch with the family and looks forward to watching little Jack grow up.
Cora Riley, an EMT who later responded to the scene, told Fox4, “(Taylor) was very, very excited, like it was his own baby being delivered. It was great.”
