FORD HEIGHTS, Ill. — A firefighter trainee has been accused of setting fire to three vacant homes in the far south suburbs.

19-year-old Kaumain Allen is charged with three counts of arson in Ford Heights.

The Cook County sheriff’s office says Allen started the fires then responded with the fire department to fight the flames.

Police found him in the 900 block of East 15th Street while conducting a premises check.

Allen told the officer he was there on fire department business, retrieving some equipment.

Police later found out the department had not sent Allen there.
