OAKLAND — A mother of three was fatally shot by a stray bullet while shielding her children from gunfire in Oakland on Monday.
The woman was identified as 30-year-old Chyemil Pierce and according to Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney, Pierce had grown up in the area.
The shooting occurred at around 4:45 p.m. as Pierce was walking her 7- and 9-year-old children home from school.
“My heart is burning for the loss of the life of a young mother and for her children, who will grow up without their mother,” Gibson McElhaney told KRON.
The councilwoman told KRON that the shooting occurred after a fight between young women erupted in the streets. A group of young men joined the fight and began firing.
Oakland police said two other people were injured in the gunfight, but both were in stable condition.
No one has been arrested for the shooting.
