CHICAGO–   The Chicago Cubs have announced they will pay for Ernie Banks’ $35,000 funeral.

Donnellan Funeral Home filed a court claim Wednesday, asking for the money.

Expenses for the funeral that was held last month included an $11,000 casket and nearly $7,000 dollars in flowers.

Friday night, the Cubs confirm the tab will be covered by team management and the Ricketts family.

Banks was the Cubs’ first black player when he joined the team in 1953, six years after Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier.

The Hall of Famer, two-time MVP, military veteran and winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom died Jan. 23 of a heart attack.
