NEW YORK — A female correction officer was nearly raped by a prisoner at New York’s Rikers Island prison but was saved by a group of inmates who were nearby.

The New York Daily News reports the inmates helped other responding correction officers tear away Plexiglass of a locked vestibule where the victim and her attacker were.

The attack happened Saturday night.

The 27-year-old attacker is 5’9 and 290 pounds. He reportedly dragged the officer into an adjacent bathroom and blocked her from opening the security door.

He is serving 5 – 10 years for raping a 13-year-old girl in 2007, court records show.

The officer was taken to the hospital.

An investigation is ongoing.
